… Jamie and Darian walked through Central Park, enjoying the sights and sounds that only seemed to come with being in New York. The noise of the streets, filled with as many people as cars, faded into the background with each step they took further into the park. Soon, only birds could be heard overhead. It was amazing! Less than one hundred feet behind them was the hustle and bustle of city life, but here it was as if none of that existed.

Darian felt Jamie take his hand as they walked. He grinned and felt his heart swell.

“Here we can just be us!” Jamie said, bringing their clasped fingers to his mouth and kissing the back of Darian’s hand.

They walked on, meandering the paved paths that wound through the park. An open field on their left looked enticing, as they spied many couples lying out on blankets, sharing a picnic or simply some cuddle time. Jamie led them to a shady spot and sat down. Darian sat next to him.

“No, not there,” Jamie said. He scooted back against a tree and spread his legs. “Like at home, on Dad’s comfy chair. I want to hold you.”

Darian did not hesitate to seat himself between Jamie’s legs with his back against Jamie’s chest. He tilted his head back on Jamie’s shoulder.

“Now this is what I call a vacation!” Jamie declared.

Darian hugged Jamie’s arms, which were wrapped around his chest. “Me too.”

“Look,” Jamie pointed discreetly.

Darian followed Jamie’s instruction and noticed another gay couple enjoying much the same arrangement. One boy had his back leaning on one of the large boulders that were scattered throughout the park, and the other boy was lying back in his arms, between his legs. The only difference was these boys were taking pleasure in sharing a lingering kiss.

“No one even cares,” Jamie pointed out. “People walk by like it’s normal.”

“I think it’s normal here, Jamie. Or at the very least, ‘normal’ that New Yorkers don’t care. I’ve already seen loads of couples walking down the street arm in arm or kissing on the sidewalk, and no one bats an eye. We just live in the wrong town.”

“Then maybe we should move here!”

Darian cocked his head so he could look at Jamie in the eyes. “Are you serious? Could you really live here and move away from your dad?”

Jamie made a face. “I guess not. I don’t know. Maybe we could live in DC for a while, and I could get used to living away from him first.”

“Or we could start by living in an apartment in Hanover,” Darian suggested. “Start slower, Jamie. I know how much you love your dad. We’ll move out of his house, find an apartment, live there a while and then move gradually further away. How’s that?”

“Sounds like the perfect plan. Unless… unless my dad agrees to move to New York with Cheryl. Then all my problems are solved!”

Darian smiled and rested his head back in its favored position. He felt Jamie rubbing his chin on the side of his head, like he enjoyed doing most of the time they sat this way.
